As a practical alternative to Blu-ray disk, the Western Digital HD player offers more video formats to play, longer play times and higher more flexible storage space. All in high quality 1080 line resolution. The WD HD MP is a compact hardware video conversion unit that uses standard high capacity IDE or SATA hard drives as your storage and playback medium.
For more permanent storage however, do not ignore Blu-ray disk as it should still be part of your long term archival strategy.
*** Offer applies to HD film transfer orders of $750 (about US$700) or more. Not including any shipping and taxes due.***
Factoid : Moderately encoded H.264 video for example on a 500GB drive represents about 70hrs of video playtime.
HomeDVD will encode your movie films to HD video resolutions in either MPEG-2 or H.264 compliant High Definition video format and store them on a portable hard drive that either you supply or we purchase on your behalf. If at a later date, those same video files can be easily authored and burned to Blu-ray media for a more permanent record of your family memories.

If you have HomeDVD convert your 8mm, Super8 or 16mm films to Hi Def video, the WD media player alternative may work for you. The WD media player supports three of the HD video formats that HomeDVD can produce; MPEG4/AVC and MPEG-2. Rather than writing to a Blu-ray disk, the video files can be written to a portable USB-2 type hard drive. The Media Player does the rest, decode the video in real time and output to either an HDMI or analog video interface on your HD display.
